There are two ways in which a field can be identified:

  1. Field Name/identifier - this will be unique within a form, but might not be unique across all your forms or projects.
  2. System-assigned Field ID - this will be unique across all your forms and across all your projects.



Field Identifier / Name

When you add a field, you are asked to enter a 'Field Name'. This name will not be displayed on your team members' handsets - only the 'Display text' will be visible on the handset.




When will the field name be used?

  • When you print the form or save it as PDF.
  • As column headings when you export your data.





Tips for naming your fields

  • Keep it short yet descriptive.
  • Don't use white spaces - use an underscore instead (e.g. housing_characteristics). Many statistical programs do not support spaces, so this will save you time when you analyse your data.
  • Only use alphanumeric characters (letters and numbers) and steer clear of special characters. 


System-assigned field ID

Each time you add a field, an ID number will automatically be assigned to the field. This ID is unique across all your forms, and across all your projects.  


This field will not be displayed on your team members' handsets. It can be viewed by:

  • Hovering your mouse pointer over the field name when designing the form - the field's ID will appear as a tooltip.
  • Exporting your data from the Analytics tab - the field IDs will be included as a separate column.





Why use the field ID?


When collaborating on a form, it is useful to refer to your fields using its field ID as the ID is completely unique and cannot change once created. So even if you change the name of your field, or reorder your fields, the ID will still refer to the same field.


Field IDs are also helpful when working with operators.
