Location data not available

Reference Number: AA-00649 Last Updated: 2016-11-09 18:36

Symptom

  • Fieldworker is unable to obtain a GPS reading when capturing a GPS question in the field.
  • The longitude and latitude fields for a GPS question display as "0" or "N/A" when viewing a completed submission.

Possible Causes

  1. GPS is disabled on the device.
  2. The date and/or time on the device are incorrect. The Mobenzi Researcher app/plugin requires a recent GPS reading in order to be considered valid - having the incorrect date/time on the device may make a GPS reading seem outdated and therefore invalid.
  3. The fieldworker did not allow sufficient time to capture a valid reading. For the auto-captured GPS reading to be included, the user must wait for the globe icon to appear on the main menu in the Mobenzi Researcher app/plugin.
  4. The environmental conditions may not be conducive to obtaining a GPS reading. Cloudy conditions, inclement weather or lack of coverage could prevent a GPS lock.

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Ensure that GPS is enabled:

  • The method of enabling GPS will vary somewhat from one type of device to another and from one version of Android to another.
  • In most cases, swipe from the top of the screen down to reveal common settings. Ensure the "GPS" or "Location" icon is highlighted. If not, tap to enable it.
  • You may also need to ensure that the Location mode is set to "GPS (satellites)". Tap the "Settings" (gear/cog) icon then select "Location" and ensure the mode is set to GPS (satellites).

2. Ensure the date and time on the device are correct:

  • The method of configuring the date/time will vary somewhat from one type of device to another and from one version of Android to another.
  • In most cases, swipe from the top of the screen down to reveal common settings. Tap the "Settings" (gear/cog) icon.

  • Select "Date and time", and use the options to set the most accurate time. It is recommended that you choose "Automatic date and time" but you can opt to set the date and time manually if you prefer.

3. For a survey to have GPS included automatically as part of the submission, wait a few minutes for the globe to appear on the main menu before starting a survey. For a GPS question to return a result (or the globe icon to appear) you may need to be outside in clear view of the sky.
