Manually provision a handset

Mobenzi Researcher is packaged as a Mobenzi Gateway plugin

The Mobenzi Researcher application is deployed as a plugin via Mobenzi Gateway and is supported by all Android smartphones and tablets running 4.0.3 ("Ice Cream Sandwich") or later.

A legacy version of the stand-alone Mobenzi Researcher mobile app for older versions of Android is available until the end of 2017.

Consider using the Handset Setup Wizard instead

We recommend that you configure a handset setup wizard rather than manually provisioning.

This article outlines how to manually link a handset to your account which consists of the following 4 steps (and assumes you have already completed step 1 below). This article also covers how to re-provision a handset if you ever need to re-install the Mobenzi Researcher plugin. The handset setup wizard allows you to skip the first 3 steps.

  1. Add the handset to the Mobenzi Researcher web console 
  2. Check the handset prerequisites are in place
  3. Provision the handset from the console
  4. Download and install the software on the handset. If you need to install the legacy, stand-alone version of Mobenzi Researcher you can follow the instructions for older Android devices.
Security: "Invalid Token" error

If you ever delete/remove the Mobenzi Researcher plugin from the handset and wish to re-install, you will need to perform step 3 above after reinstalling. For security reasons, you will receive an "Invalid Token" error on the device until you click the "Provision device" link on the web console. Once you check for updates, the invalid token error will disappear. 

Check the handset meets the minimum requirements

  1. The handset must have Android version 4.0.3 ("Ice Cream Sandwich") or above installed.
  2. The handset must have access to the internet (GPRS, 3G, EDGE or WiFi connectivity is enabled). Enabling mobile data connectivity varies depending on the type of handset you are using. You should contact your mobile network service provider if you are having trouble connecting to the internet.
  3. If you are using mobile data connectivity, ensure the handset has sufficient airtime/data to download the Mobenzi Gateway application and Mobenzi Researcher plugin.
  4. Ensure you can download applications from outside the Play Store: Go to: "Settings", "App" or "Security" and check the option to allow "Unknown sources".

It is important to note that if SIM cards are swapped on the handset, it is possible that connectivity settings will be lost. You should therefore avoid changing SIM cards or settings.

Provision the handset from the console

  1. Search for and select the handset you wish to provision.
  2. From the Manage Device menu, select "Provision the device":

  3. Confirm that you wish to provision the device.
  4. Follow the download instructions:

  5. Follow the instructions to download and install the Mobenzi software onto the handset.
